IPL Photo Facial - (Intense Pulsed Light)
Red Lotus Medical Spa offers CUTERA® Limelight IPL treatment to our clients who suffer from acne scars and other conditions including:
- Patchy brown spots
- Unwanted redness
- Dilated pores
- Scarring caused by acne
- Damage from the sun
The CUTERA® Limelight IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) laser treatment is a unique, non-ablative treatment that treats acne scars, rosacea, brown spots and sun damage. The IPL technology of the CUTERA® Limelight is different from other IPL technologies because it uses three specific wavelengths that can be adjusted to target different skin conditions. The limelight IPL can seek out specific pigments in the skin such as acne scarring and dark spots and tighten pores for a clearer complexion.
What is IPL?
IPL, or Intense Pulsed Light, is a non-invasive skin treatment that uses gentle pulses of light energy to address a wide range of skin concerns. Unlike lasers, which use a single wavelength of light, IPL delivers multiple wavelengths, allowing it to treat several issues at the same time
The light energy is absorbed by pigments in the skin (like melanin or hemoglobin). This process helps to:
- Break down unwanted pigmentation such as sunspots and freckles.
- Reduce redness and visible blood vessels.
- Stimulate collagen production for smoother, firmer skin.
Over time, your body naturally eliminates the treated pigment or vascular lesions, leaving your skin looking clearer and more even.
Possible Side Effects
IPL is well tolerated by most clients. Mild, temporary side effects can include:
- Redness or swelling (similar to a mild sunburn)
- Darkening of spots before they fade
- Slight skin sensitivity in the treated area
- Rarely, blistering or temporary pigmentation changes
Our team will evaluate your skin beforehand to ensure IPL is safe and effective for your needs.
How It Works
- IPL uses broad‑spectrum pulses of light (multiple wavelengths) that penetrate the skin and selectively target melanin (pigment) and hemoglobin (redness) beneath the surface.
- The light energy is absorbed by the pigment or small vessels; this converts to heat, breaks them down, and the body gradually clears them away. At the same time, some collagen stimulation occurs which improves texture and tone.
- Because it’s non‑ablative (doesn’t remove the top layer of the skin), downtime is minimal compared to ablative lasers.
Pre Treatment
- Avoid tanning (sun exposure, tanning beds, self‑tanner) for at least ~2‑4 weeks prior to treatment.
- Stop strong exfoliants / retinoids / acids (such as glycolic, retinol, etc) a few days before treatment.
- Arrive with clean skin (no makeup, heavy creams) in the area being treated.
- Discuss any skin conditions, medications (especially those increasing light sensitivity), and your skin tone/expectations with the provider — IPL works best for certain skin types.
Post Treatment
- Mild redness, warmth or even darkening of pigmented spots (“coffee grounds” look) is common and usually resolves in days.
- Apply broad‑spectrum sunscreen every day. Avoid direct sun exposure or tanning for several weeks post‑treatment.
- Avoid harsh exfoliants, very hot baths/saunas, strenuous exercise that induces heavy sweating for at least 24‑48 hours (or as recommended).
- Multiple sessions are usually needed for optimal results (often spaced ~3‑4 weeks apart).
